Philadelphia 76ers President Daryl Morey Steps Down; Nick Nurse to Remain as Head Coach

Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey has parted ways with the franchise, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania on May 12 (local time). Morey met with owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer in Philadelphia, where both sides mutually agreed to end the partnership. The decision came shortly after the Sixers lost to the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Playoffs’ conference semifinals.

Nick Nurse is expected to continue as head coach for the upcoming season, which would mark his fourth year with the team. Nurse has compiled a 116-130 record over three seasons, including a 24-58 campaign last season. However, this season he guided the Sixers to a historic first-round playoff comeback from a 1-3 deficit, defeating the Boston Celtics.

The search for a new team president will be led by Bob Myers, President of Sports at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. Myers will also temporarily oversee the basketball operations. He is widely recognized as the architect of the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty, winning four championships as general manager.

Morey led the Sixers’ basketball operations for six seasons, posting a 270-212 record and five playoff appearances. During his tenure, he made aggressive moves, including the blockbuster trade for James Harden and signing Paul George. However, according to ESPN, the star trio of George, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid played only 43 games together over the past two seasons, going 21-22. Their combined salary for next season is $153 million (approximately ¥241 billion at current exchange rates).

Morey also drew criticism for trading Jared McCain at this season’s deadline; McCain has since become a key rotation player for the Oklahoma City Thunder. With Morey’s departure, attention now turns to how the new team president will shape the roster and organizational direction moving forward.
