Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, the team, his agency, and the NBA confirmed on May 13.

According to initial reports from NBC4, the Los Angeles Fire Department received a medical emergency call around 5 p.m. local time on Monday. When paramedics arrived at the scene, Clarke was already pronounced dead. The official cause of death will be determined through an autopsy. TMZ Sports confirmed that Clarke’s death is being investigated as a suspected drug overdose, and law enforcement found drug paraphernalia at the residence where he was staying.

Clarke had been arrested in Arkansas on April 2 on charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance, reportedly kratom, a herbal supplement sometimes used as a pain alternative, which was set to become illegal in Tennessee on July 2. He was released on bail the next day.

Drafted 21st overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 out of Gonzaga and immediately traded to Memphis, Clarke was part of the same rookie class as Ja Morant. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2020 alongside Morant and signed a multi-year extension with the Grizzlies in October 2022. Over his seven-year NBA career, all with Memphis, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was in the final year of his contract, worth $12.5 million. Just last September, Clarke proposed to his girlfriend.

The news sent shockwaves through the basketball community, prompting tributes from his agency, the Grizzlies, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
