Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed that negotiations over a contract extension for Austrian international Konrad Laimer have hit a standstill. The two sides remain far apart on key terms, particularly regarding salary expectations.
“At the moment, our positions do not align,” Freund told Sky Sports on the sidelines of Bayern’s match against Wolfsburg. “We want to extend Konny’s contract—that is clear. Now we need to find a way to bridge the gap between expectations.”
Laimer joined Bayern in the summer of 2023 on a deal running until June 2027. At that point, he will turn 30. His versatility and high work rate have made him a valuable squad player, often covering multiple positions across midfield and defense. However, the club has recently taken a stricter approach to wage structure in contract talks.
According to reports, Laimer currently earns between €8 million and €9 million per year. He is seeking a raise to around €15 million annually, a figure Bayern is unwilling to meet. Club honorary president Uli Hoeneß has publicly weighed in: “Konny is a player I value highly. He is extremely important to the team and the club’s image, and he gives everything on the pitch. But he is not Diego Maradona. Players like him must accept that there are limits.”
Despite the impasse, Freund emphasized that relations remain entirely professional. “There is absolutely no discord,” he added. The ongoing standoff reflects Bayern’s evolving approach to salary management, as well as the delicate balance between player ambition and club discipline.
