Contreras completed his trip around the bases but was unable to return for the second inning. The Red Sox initially described the injury as a contusion, though the team stated they would conduct imaging to assess the severity of the issue.
This marked the eighth time Contreras has been hit by a pitch this season, tying him with St. Louis’ J.J. Wetherholt and Ivan Herrera for the MLB lead.
Contreras, who will turn 34 on Wednesday, leads Boston with eight home runs and 23 RBIs, batting .259 across 39 games.
The three-time All-Star is in his first season with the Red Sox. Over 1,116 career games with the Chicago Cubs (2016-22), St. Louis Cardinals (2023-25), and Boston, he has a .258 batting average with 180 home runs and 571 RBIs.
Andruw Monasterio replaced Contreras at first base and recorded hits in his first two at-bats.
